Setting the valve clearance
The valve clearances are checked between
the end
of the valve stem and the adjusting screw
of the rocker arm.
Check the clearances every 7.500 km (4.700 miles).
The inlet and exhaust valves should be set to a clearance of 0.20 mm (0.0078 inch), with the engine cold. To avoid early damage to the exhaust valves it is advisable to set their clearances between 0.20 and 0.25 mm.
CYLINDER 1 is on firing position
Rotate the crankshaft until the flywheel mark is in the correct position and the rotor arm is pointing to the distributor house sign (see drawing above).
Set the inlet valve clearance of valve 1 and 2.
Set the exhaust valve clearance of valve 1 and 3.
CYLINDER 4 is on firing position
Rotate the crankshaft until the flywheel mark is in the correct position and the rotor arm is opposite the distributor house sign.
Set the inlet valve clearance of valve 3 and 4.
Set the exhaust valve clearance of valve 2 and 4.
With 1 rotation of the crankshaft (360 degrees) all valve clearances can be checked or set.
Turn the crankshaft entirely round and check the established settings of clearances.
